Pawsbook: Honoring a pet, loving beyond death

We have been encountering posts on dogs, cats, and other animals on Facebook that are eye-openers, or inspiring, or enlightening, or educational, or can make one feel good during a stressful day, or make one encouraged to help the poor souls among us.

Sunday Pets would like to share these notable posts of netizens through this space called Pawsbook.

Honoring a pet, loving beyond death

Arvee Gomez lost her dog late last year. The pain was unbearable. Worse, they could not grieve to ease the pain because of restrictions due to the pandemic.

There are many ways to honor a pet. These help us humans in our grieving process. One way is to adopt a rescued dog or cat. Another way is to volunteer in animal shelters.

To honor her beloved pet, Arvee decided to help animals who were rescued by animal welfare groups. Arvee donated dog food and cat food to three shelters.

She posted this on Facebook last month:

“I finally got around to packing modest donations for three animal organizations: Animal Kingdom Foundation, Save Animals of Love and Light – Save ALL, and Stray Queen. The donations are made in memory of our family dog, Chibi. She passed away suddenly last year, and we did not have time to grieve properly. I decided to give back and rightfully celebrate her life at the same time with mine.

Chibi came into our lives like a storm cloud, dark and aggressive, her puppy form enveloped by my father’s rough hands. I was in my uniform, surprised by the idea that we were getting a dog since my sister has asthma (surprisingly, an episode never happened again). Chibi lived a fruitful 11 years. She barked after the neighborhood cats, received baths on weekends, and guarded the house against thieves. She left quietly one warm afternoon in August, outliving her brothers and sisters and even some of her offspring with her age.

She may have been named after a Japanese word almost synonymous with ‘small,’ but her impact on our lives is enormous. Go wild out there in dog heaven, Chibi.

If you plan to donate as well, please head over to the FB pages of the first two animal foundations, Animal Kingdom Foundation and Save Animals of Love and Light – SAVE ALL for the details.

Meanwhile, Stray Queen is a personal advocacy page of one of the nurses in the Makati LGU where I got my booster shot. She silently campaigned for her cause by tearing a piece of paper, scribbling the name of her page, and slipping said paper unto the hands of every person in the queue for a COVID-19 vaccine. Kindly message the Stray Queen account on how to arrange the delivery of your donations, which she may receive at her address or at the school where she is based to work.”
