F2 eyes 1st-round sweep

Powerhouse F2 Logistics seeks a clean sweep of the first round when it faces struggling Marinerang Pilipina in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference today at the Muntinlupa Sports Center.

F2 eyes 1st-round sweep
Jaja Santiago of the Foton Tornadoes appears to be staring at the ball after scoring a point.

Action is set at 4:15 p.m. with the Cargo Movers looking for their seventh consecutive win in this prestigious women’s club tourney bankrolled by Team Rebel Sports, SOGO, Eurotel, PCSO, Cocolife, UCPB Gen, Mueller, Senoh, Asics, Bizooku and One Sport.

Meanwhile, Generika-Ayala aims to get back on winning track as it tackles PLDT Home Fibr in the second game at 7 p.m.

Bannered by Filipino-American Kalei Mau, the Cargo Movers raced to six straight wins, leaving rival Petron (5-1), Generika-Ayala (4-2) and Foton (4-3) settling for the second, third and fourth spots, respectively.

Mau, the former Arizona star who moved to the Cargo Movers following the disbandment of United VC, is getting better each day as she finally developed chemistry with mainstays Aby Marano, Dawn Macandili, Ara Galang, Kianna Dy and Majoy Baron.

In fact, in their previous 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Sta. Lucia in Silay City, Mau provided the offensive muscle early on before Marano and Galang finished the job to keep the Cargo Movers’ immaculate slate intact.

But for F2 Logistics head coach Ramil de Jesus, they haven’t achieved anything.

“Our record in the eliminations is not important. It’s just a confidence booster for us,” said de Jesus, who is looking to regain the All-Filipino crown that had eluded them for the past two years.

“The quarterfinals are the most important because even if you end up on top but losses to a lower-seed team, all your effort in the elimination round will be wasted.”

Also tipped to draw attention is the battle between Generika-Ayala and PLDT.

After riding the crest of a four-game winning streak, the Lifesavers came crashing back following a sorry 18-25, 12-25, 16-25 loss to Petron Tuesday at the Bacoor Strike Gym in Bacoor City.

The Lifesavers found themselves bowing to the Blaze Spikers’ suffocating net defense as attackers Patty Orendain and Fiola Ceballos had a very forgettable performance.

But it wouldn’t be easy as the Power Hitters are also looking to stop the bleeding after suffering three straight setbacks, including a 16-25, 27-29, 22-25 defeat to Petron also over the weekend in Malolos City.
